David Phillips has slammed Leeds United defender Luke Ayling for his defensive frailties against Watford.

The Whites ended up winning 3-0 and Ayling did not concede a single goal but there were moments when they looked vulnerable.

One such moment was when Cucho Hernandez was clean through on goal due to the right-back's error in judgement.

Speaking on the Premier League world feed, Phillips, a Sky Sports pundit, said, "Awful defending from Ayling. Far too cheap there to allow Hernandez the space."

Not the best of games

While this may have been Leeds' performance of the season so far, Ayling cannot say that about himself.

He has been the club's undisputed first-choice right-back and will start next game as well, but he is making a number of errors of late.

His positioning has been off, and defensively he has not been the most solid.

If the team's attacking then he does look pleasing on the eye and one would wonder why he's not at a Champions League club.

However, if he's watched over the course of a few months, the flaws in his game are apparent.

There clearly needs to be something that must be rectified in his game before it's too late for Jesse Marsch and Leeds.

Hopefully, the American finds the right solution in the coming weeks before things get out of hand and the Whites are dragged back into a relegation scrap.
