Sky Sports pundit raves about Leeds United loanee Stuart McKinstry as he scores v Rangers

Sky Sports pundit Andy Walker was blown away by Stuart McKinstry’s goal as the Leeds United loanee scored for Motherwell against Rangers on Sunday.

Motherwell lost 2-1 in the Scottish Premiership showdown at Fir Park but did well throughout the game and one player who shone was Leeds’ McKinstry, who re-joined the Steelmen on loan in the summer transfer window.

He scored in the 77th minute from a free-kick, beating experienced goalkeeper Allan McGregor with a cross-cum-shot.

Former Celtic striker Walker was particularly impressed by the 20-year-old’s goal, which was his first in senior professional football.

“[McGregor] shouldn’t have stepped forward, it just drifts over his head,” said Walker on Sky Sports Main Event after McKinstry’s goal on Sunday (16 October, 01:33pm).

“Just look at McGregor here. The ball’s played in, he comes forward and then realises there’s too much on it and it falls into that top corner.

“It’s a remarkable effort from McKinstry.

“Whether he meant it or not is immaterial, Motherwell are right back in the game.”

Brilliant goal

If you can find the Scottish football highlights on BBC Scotland, it’s definitely worth taking a look at McKinstry’s goal.

Part of us want to say it was a bit of a fluke and that he didn’t mean it.

But the more you watch it, the more you think that it was done on purpose because he did have a look before and he curled it into that top corner beautifully.

McGregor is a 40-year-old veteran goalkeeper – but even with his experience he was able to deal with the young on-loan Leeds midfielder.

McKinstry might not have a future at Leeds.

He’s 20 years old now and you’d have thought he be in the first team more or at least playing for a better club out on loan if he was ever going to make it at Elland Road.

But Motherwell are his boyhood club.

It’d be great to see him go on and become a modern-day legend at Fir Park.
