Phil Hay slams 'stupid' Rodrigo after Leeds United concede goal v Arsenal
Rodrigo’s “stupid” cross-field pass caused Arsenal to score the match-winning goal against Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday, according to Phil Hay.
Rodrigo had the ball on the right wing at the halfway line when he decided to play a long-range diagonal pass to the left-back area where Pascal Struijk was.
Bukayo Saka intercepted the ball and went on to score against Illan Meslier from a very tight angle.
The Athletic’s Hay took to Twitter to react to Rodrigo’s mistake, saying: “Rodrigo with the most stupid crossfield ball you’ll ever see, smashed from right to left and inviting Saka to nick it and attack.
“[Martin] Odegaard plays Saka in behind Struijk, Saka with a brilliant finish into the roof of the net.
“But that was ludicrous.”
We cannot excuse what Rodrigo did.
However, what followed was also completely unacceptable.
It would be unfair to say that Struijk messed up but the defender definitely could have done a better job at stopping Saka and Odegaard’s interchange.
Once Saka got into the box, Liam Cooper did a very loose job of staying tight to him and he managed to get a shot away from a very tight angle.
Yes, Cooper pushed him wide and no, you wouldn’t have expected Saka to score from that angle. But still, Cooper probably should have been tighrer to him.
And then Meslier’s goalkeeping was really bad.
Saka struck the ball well but if Meslier had stood his ground instead of bending his knees and dropping down, the Frenchman would have saved it.
It was such a terrible goal to concede.
