Rob Green: Leeds United fortunate after VAR decision in first half v Leicester City

Leeds United were lucky after a VAR call in the first half against Leicester at Elland Road on Sunday, according to Sky Sports pundit Rob Green.

Jamie Vardy looked to have been fouled by Diego Llorente in a clear goalscoring position before referee Darren England signalled that the Leicester forward was offside.

However, ex-Leeds goalkeeper Green pointed out on the Premier League’s world feed that Ademola Lookman didn’t pass the ball into Vardy and instead, it was a tackle by Struijk that led to the Leicester striker being brought down.

“That was a big call,” said Green.

“It helped the referee Darren England out because it was a handball by Johnny Evans at the start.

“But the argument is it looks like Struijk plays the ball rather than Lookman, to play Vardy onside. Vardy gets in goalside of Llorente.”

After the VAR check, Green said: “That’s a fortunate one for Leeds. Vardy is technically not offside because it is Struijk that plays the ball.

“Is it clear and obvious? I don’t know. But we can see it from up here.”

Awful refereeing

We may have gotten a bit lucky there because it did seem as though Struijk touched the ball towards Vardy and not Lookman.

But the referee did have a stinker of a first half for both teams.

Leeds had two penalty shouts waved away by England despite Phillips being decked in the area at a corner kick.

While the second one was a bit soft, the first one saw Youri Tielemans intentionally run into the Leeds midfielder to knock him down.

After that second penalty shout, Leicester’s Caglar Soyuncu clearly headed the ball out of play yet England awarded a goal kick.

It wasn’t a great half for England but we’re impressed by the way that Leeds have set themselves up.

It’s annoying that after Raphihnha’s goal, a mere number of seconds passed before Harvey Barnes equalised.

We couldn’t do much about the goal itself – it was a stunner – but we are playing quite well and we’re confident of getting a result here.
