Rene Maric reacts to 'unbelievable' Leeds United fan claim after journalist reveals what happened to Patrick Bamford
Rene Maric has hailed Leeds United fans for their support for Patrick Bamford after he missed several golden chances to score against Arsenal on Sunday.
Bamford, 28, came off the bench at half time in Leeds’ 1-0 defeat at Elland Road but missed a penalty, had a goal disallowed and failed to convert a couple of one-on-one opportunities.
Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Joe Donnohue reported that there were chants in support of Bamford from the Kop and West Stand after his missed opportunities, leading to Maric talking up the home support in West Yorkshire.
“Reading this on my timeline and have to say something: Elland Road is so amazing, great, great fans. Thanks so much,” said the Leeds assistant coach via his personal Twitter account on Sunday evening (16 October).
“Just unbelievable and playing a huge part in the lads‘ amazing performance, but we have to reward ourselves, that’s up to us! Got to continue improving.
Best fans in the world
Bamford will be gutted to have not scored against Arsenal.
He could have easily had a hat-trick after coming off the bench if he’d converted his penalty, scored another penalty that was overturned and netted one of the one-on-ones he missed.
He’ll know that. We know that.
But Bamford changed the game for Leeds after he came on.
We played well for almost 90 minutes against the Gunners – it was just a stupid mistake that led to Bukayo Saka’s match-winning game to extend the London side’s lead at the top of the Premier League table.
Bamford’s introduction at half-time to replace Rodrigo – who was guilty of said stupid mistake – added a lot more impact and cutting edge up front.
Bamford knows how to score goals. He just doesn’t quite have the execution sometimes.
We’ll support him though. He’s been injured for a long time and he will take a while to rediscover his form from the 2020/21 season.
