Raphinha shines; Meslier disappoints - Leeds United player ratings v Watford

Leeds United finally registered their first win of the season with a 1-0 victory against Watford at Elland Road on Saturday.

Diego Llorente scored in the first half from a Raphinha corner and that proved to be enough for Marcelo Bielsa’s men.

While it was relatively routine, there were a few players that weren’t up to the mark.

Here are MOT Leeds News’ ratings for the 1-0 win on Saturday afternoon:

Illan Meslier – 4

A rare error from the Leeds goalkeeper nearly cost the side two points. However, Christian Kabasele supposedly pushed Liam Cooper to the ground which saw the goal being chalked off. The Frenchman, who has been praised by Bielsa time and again, had a lapse in concentration and was extremely fortunate that the referee ruled in his favour.

Jamie Shackleton – 6.5

Playing at right-back, the youngster put in a relatively average performance. Wasn’t caught out of position and quietly went on about his business.

Diego Llorente – 8

Scored the game’s only goal and was a rock in the back line for the Whites. Liam Cooper looks much more confident when he’s got the Spaniard playing along with him.

Liam Cooper – 7

Seemed much more assured with and without the ball and rarely put in a foot wrong against Watford.

Junior Firpo – 7

Firpo has struggled in his early days at Elland Road, but this was his best game in a Leeds shirt. Was confident carrying the ball down the pitch and was inch-perfect with his passing as well.

Kalvin Phillips – 6

Phillips was another one of Bielsa’s mainstays who had an underwhelming game. He made a few erratic passes and lost most of the 50-50s he attempted in the middle of the park.

Raphinha – 8.5

The Brazilian put in yet another scintillating performance for the Whites and was the best player on the day. The way he took players on for fun and constantly looked to find Rodrigo with his long-ranged passes was just fantastic.

Stuart Dallas – 7

A good game from the 30-year-old who played at the heart of the midfield. Played well right until he was taken off in the 78th minute for Tyler Roberts.

Mateusz Klich – 7.5

Klich was the best of the Leeds midfielders and was constantly running for the entire game. He was eventually taken off in stoppage time but that was to kill time and Watford’s momentum.

Daniel James – 5

James was handed a start over Jack Harrison and did little to justify Bielsa’s faith in him. Needs to do more to be a regular in the Argentine’s side.

Rodrigo – 6

The Spaniard led the line, but failed to score from the few chances he had. He lacked that cutting edge one expects from a number nine and certainly has few things he needs to improve soon.

Tyler Roberts – 6

Pascal Strujk – N/A
