Premier League release statement on Brentford vs Leeds controversy

Leeds United thought they had given away a penalty in their clash with Brentford on Sunday.

Leeds defender Gabriel Gudmundsson continued his feud with Dango Ouattara that had started when the Bees ace caught the Whites man in the sixth minute.

The Swede made contact with his rival in his own box in the 35th minute, and a penalty was awarded to the hosts, but it was later overturned with a VAR check.

The situation has now been clarified after an official statement was released by the Premier League.

Brentford penalty overturn vs Leeds explained in Premier League statement

Leeds have history with referee John Brooks, and he pointed to the spot when he noticed the potential foul.

However, the Premier League match centre took to X on 14 December to explain why the incident was overturned, and no penalty was awarded.

They said: “After VAR review, the referee overturned the original decision of penalty to Brentford.”

They also added the referee’s on-field announcement into the statement, which read: “Referee announcement: “After review, Brentford number 19, who was fouled, is in an offside position. Therefore, the final decision is an indirect free-kick.”

Why Leeds can be confident of Brentford win

Leeds have arguably been the better side so far at the G-Tech Community Stadium, and they have created several chances.

Keith Andrews’ side are struggling to get Igor Thiago into the contest, which is good news for the Whites as they chase a vital win.

Daniel Farke‘s side secured important results against Chelsea and Liverpool recently, but if they beat the Bees, it would be an even bigger result.

If they are to survive the relegation battle, they need to pick up points from the teams around them more than they need them from the big six.

They are going the right way to do so, at the moment.

If they can keep up this performance level, then they have every chance of gaining all three points and taking a step closer to survival.
