Phil Hay: Leeds United fans applauded players at full time v Manchester City

Leeds United fans stayed after the full-time whistle to applaud the team after the 7-0 defeat against Manchester City on Tuesday.

In what was Marcelo Bielsa’s heaviest defeat as a manager, the Whites saw themselves get outplayed by the Premier League leaders.

The fans, who sat through this demoralising defeat, stayed right until the end to show their respect to the manager and the players.

Via his personal Twitter account, The Athletic journalist wrote, “Quite a big number in the away still and to their credit, they’re giving the players some applause regardless.”

Nice to see

It is refreshing to see the Leeds supporters staying beyond the final whistle and not to boo the players, but to cheer them.

Nobody would disagree that the performance was anything short of dismal, but the team kept playing the same way until the end.

They still appeared hungry without the ball and kept playing their one-on-one system without the ball.

Few of the goals conceded were clearly due to individual errors or personal brilliance, as was the case with Kevin de Bruyne’s wonder strike.

This will not make Marcelo Bielsa change his approach and neither should it.

It was just one bad day at the office and Leeds will bounce back soon and go on another run in the second half of the season.

The next game is against an erratic Arsenal side and if the Whites begin that one strongly, they’ve got a great chance of getting back to winning ways.
