‘Leeds seem to think’ – Phil Hay delivers update on Augustin as loan contract close to expiring
Jean-Kevin Augustin is still in Leeds, according to The Athletic journalist Phil Hay, and have until next Tuesday to decide on whether to extend his loan deal.
Hay was responding to a fan who said the deadline for an extension for Augustin was actually up today.
Hay responded saying, “Leeds seem to think they have until June 30 to extend JKA, because it’s a loan (not him out of contract). Regardless, I’d be surprised if they do extend given that he’s not fit. But he is still in Leeds.”
Today is the deadline for clubs to agree extensions for out-of-contract players.
Augustin on borrowed time
We can still remember the feverish excitement when it was announced that Augustin was signing in January.
It was a bit of a whirlwind deal after Leeds’ pursuit of Che Adams came to nought.
Augustin made it seem like Leeds had fallen in mud and come up smelling of roses.
A former PSG and Monaco player, currently with RB Leipzig… It seemed too good to be true.
And it looks like it might have been as Augustin hasn’t started a game and is injured again for the crucial Championship run-in.
Positive noises had been coming out of Elland Road but they’ve replaced with doom and gloom ahead of the Championship restart.
MOT Leeds News columnist Paul Robinson has said the Whites “certainly” won’t sign Augustin if he doesn’t play again this season and that’s looking less and less likely now.
It means that Leeds will be on the lookout for another striker this summer and it’s bound to raise speculation about Che Adams again.
He’s reportedly available for as little as £10m after Leeds had agreed a £19m deal for him in January, only for Southampton to pull the plug.
We’ve no doubt that Adams would have made a much bigger impact than Augustin has.
