'Not going to sign him' – Exclusive: Pundit makes claim about Leeds loanee after Phil Hay update

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Paul Robinson believes that Leeds will not sign Jean-Kevin Augustin if the striker doesn’t play for Leeds again this season.

Augustin joined Leeds on loan in January but hasn’t started a game yet – in fact he’s been restricted to just 48 minutes of action across three disappointing cameo performances.

The Athletic journalist Phil Hay has reported that Augustin is “highly unlikely” to play again this season and has also mooted that he could leave when his loan deal runs out on June 30.

If that happens, Robinson thinks it’s the end of the road for Augustin and that Leeds will not sign him on a permanent deal.

Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News Robinson said, “Players get injured and things don’t work out, unfortunately, these things happen in football.

“You take players and they get injured and things don’t work out.

“It’s not looking like he’s going to play between now and the end of the season and if that’s the case Leeds are certainly not going to sign him.

“It’s just an unfortunate signing and it’s a waste of money for what they paid for him. It was a gamble signing. Sometimes they come off.”

Leeds don’t have a lot of luck with loan signings. Izzy Brown came from Chelsea injured last season and hardly made it onto the pitch for Leeds.

Eddie Nketiah was recalled early from his loan by Arsenal over lack of game time this season and he is now starting for them in the Premier League.

Augustin could go down as the worst, though, after it was reported that Leeds have paid a £3.5m loan fee for the RB Leipzig striker.

Kicker also reported that there is an obligation to sign Augustin if promoted but Robinson obviously thinks Leeds can wriggle out of that.
