‘Mindless idiots’ – Patrick Bamford gets into spat with Leeds fan on Twitter
Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford has waded into the issues surrounding the BLM protests that are sweeping the globe.
Bamford posted a conversation he had with a Leeds fan, who was criticising footballers for getting involved with politics.
Bamford said he had “a platform to try to help force change and educate people” and accused the supporter of being “part of the problem”.
Following the exchange, Bamford went in harder on a Twitter message saying, “Mindless idiots like this are the people who need educating the most. Happy to ignore it as long as it doesn’t affect him. I wonder how he would act if the shoe were on the other foot.”
The majority of Leeds fans responded with support for Bamford, which is really good to see.
There’s long been an argument from some people that sports stars shouldn’t get involved with issues like this. Gary Lineker had it over Brexit all the time on his Twitter account.
But it just doesn’t make any sense. Sports stars are people too, with views, just like anyone else.
If you don’t want to see or hear anything but football from people like Lineker and Bamford, stay off their social media feeds – which is the place people go to express opinions – and stick to watching Bamford at Elland Road and on Sky, and Lineker on Match of the Day.
But, if people think that the protests that are sweeping the globe have nothing to do with football, they’re not keeping up with the conversation.
It looks like we could be on the cusp of real, meaningful change, that could make the game better for everybody.
It’s important that people like Bamford can speak up and speak out, and we’re proud of our striker.
