Michael Dawson stunned by Raphinha goal in Leeds United 2-2 draw v Everton

Michael Dawson was thrilled by Leeds United winger Raphinha as Marcelo Bielsa’s side drew 2-2 with Everton on Saturday afternoon.

Leeds were behind twice at Elland Road after goals from Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Demarai Gray, but Mateusz Klich and Raphinha scored late in the first and second half to level the game.

Speaking on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday [21/08/21] after Raphinha’s equaliser in the 73rd minute, ex-England defender Dawson was left in awe by the 24-year-old Brazilian.

“He is class, this player is top quality,” Dawson told Jeff Stelling.

“[Liam] Cooper lays it to the edge of the box and he just caresses it left foot into Pickford’s far corner.

“It’s easy to say but I’ve mentioned it time after time after time, people must be sick of it and hearing me mention his name and think he’s the only player I know, but he is different level this player, he is class.

“When the ball comes to him on the edge of the box he could have put his laces through but outside of the foot, phwoar, it’s to Pickford’s right and he has no chance.”

Sensation

Raphinha proved his class last season, making an impressive start to life in England after moving from France, and he’s started the 2021/22 campaign in a similar fashion.

Of course, last weekend’s 5-1 defeat to Manchester United was a huge disappointment, but there were flashes of brilliance from the Brazilian who was one of the few to fashion any attacking impetus for the Whites at Old Trafford.

But he and his teammates stepped it up against Everton in front of a packed Elland Road, and his importance was laid bare as he came up trumps to rescue a point for Bielsa’s side.

There is still plenty of room for improvement as Leeds are yet to pick up their first win of the season, but it was at least a marked improvement on last week’s disasterclass.

More of this from Raphinha and the first three points of the campaign will be en route.
