Matt Upson has slammed Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier for his performance in the defeat against Arsenal on Sunday.
The BBC pundit claimed that the stopper handed the Gunners goals at the Emirates, with plenty of mistakes being made in North London.
After two mediocre efforts to stop goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Hector Bellerin, Meslier stumbled on the ball and handed the striker the chance to double his tally from the penalty spot.
Speaking on BBC 5 Live Sport during the coverage of the game, Upson wasn’t complimentary of the young Frenchman.
“Arsenal have had a helping hand from Illan Meslier,” he said. “He’s thrown a few in and the third was pretty shocking.
“It’s a hattrick of mistakes for Meslier. Awful goalkeeping on that near post, you cannot get beaten from that angle.”
Marcelo Bielsa will be fuming.
We can make excuses for inexperience sometimes, but this was simply shocking and Meslier has to hold his hands up and admit his blame.
It isn’t the first time that this has happened either, with Meslier being beaten at his near-post numerous times this season.
His distribution has been lauded in the past, but the mistake for the penalty was simply embarrassing.
The level of competition isn’t helping, and there may need to be a fresh face brought into the club over the summer to sharpen up the club’s options.
