This is part of a regular series from our panel of Super Fans on upcoming Leeds United games. Simon Favour is a massive Liverpool fan who has been going to Anfield since the 80s and was at Elland Road when Viduka scored all four in a famous 4-3 Leeds win
Leeds have found a new army of fans in their first season back in the Premier League and they might enjoy even more support tonight after Liverpool announced they were one of the founding members of the new breakaway European Super League.
That hasn’t gone down well with pundits or fans and it will be fascinating to see if Jurgen Klopp is allowed to say anything about the shock new development tonight.
The Mirror has claimed that Klopp is “on a collision course with FSG” over the plans and Leeds fans will be hoping the off-pitch distractions hand them an advantage at Elland Road tonight.
The reverse fixture was a classic, with Liverpool ending up with the three points in a 4-3 win that could easily have gone the other way.
We asked Liverpool Super Fan Simon Favour for his thoughts on the game, the latest team news and what he thinks will happen at Elland Road on Monday night.
It’s been a funny season for Liverpool. Are you missing the fans or is it a hangover from finally winning the Premier League?
It’s definitely been a weird one. I think we are missing the fans but in some respects that’s the same for everyone. I do think no fans can be harder for teams that like to play high intensity.
The bigger issue has been our injury list. Again, every team gets them but we’ve been incredibly unlucky and the injuries have definitely affected our overall system. It’s not an excuse just context.
What did you make of the first game against Leeds?
I thought the first game was a cracker although maybe I wouldn’t be saying that if the score was reversed! I thought the penalty was a little harsh but I’ve given up trying to understand handball or offside this season. In some ways that game captures the problems we’ve been having all season.
Who do you see playing out of Salah, Firmino, Mane and Jota?
I think Salah, Firmino and Jota will start. Mane has had a poor season by his own high standards and looks tired. He could be better coming off the bench.
What have you made of Leeds this season?
Leeds have had a great season especially considering the small size of the squad and sticking to their style of play. My boss is a Leeds fan so I’ve followed you quite closely. You’ve had a few dips here and there but I imagine most Leeds fans are pleased with how it’s gone. I’m really pleased that you’ll be in the Premier League next season so you get back to Elland Road to watch top-flight football after so long.
What are you expecting from Monday’s game?
I’m expecting a similar game to the one earlier in the season. It’s massive for Liverpool because a top-four finish is vital for us to keep progressing. If Leeds win, you could squeeze into Europe if you can put a run together. I think both teams will go for it.
What’s your score prediction?
My Leeds supporting mates in Rothwell won’t be happy but I’m going to say 3-2 Liverpool. And after Monday, good luck for the rest of the season!
