Les Ferdinand and Owen Hargreaves believe Leeds deserved a penalty

Les Ferdinand and Owen Hargreaves both believed that Leeds United deserved a penalty on Friday night against Newcastle.

The Whites remained winless in five games after sharing the spoils in a 1-1 draw at St James’ Park.

However, the result could have been a lot different if they were given a penalty after Dan James drew a foul inside the Toons penalty area.

Speaking at the half-time show for Premier League Productions, Ferdinand responded when he asked if it was a penalty: “100 percent that’s a penalty. I’m trying to understand why the referee did not point to the spot there.”

Hargreaves, who was also on the panel with him, echoed his views. He said, “It’s silly. I don’t understand the rules sometimes. That looked like a clear foul.”

Big decision

Should this decision have rightly gone in Leeds’ favour, they would’ve gone into the break with a 2-1 lead and could play the game on their terms in the second period.

However, they had to tailor their approach slightly which ended up in them not picking up maximum points.

VAR checks every passage of play in the game, but if there were significant appeals from the Leeds players then they could possibly have told the referee to have a look at the monitor.

That did not happen and they just looked past it, much to the annoyance of Leeds fans.

Once the players would’ve seen it, they would certainly have been left fuming.

Hopefully, such things don’t keep happening as it spoils a good week of training as games are won and lost by the finest of margins.
