Leeds United suffered another worrying injury this afternoon with Ian Poveda going off with what looked like a foot or ankle problem while playing for the Under-23s.

He was helped off the pitch in the second half of the game against Sunderland this afternoon at Thorp Arch.

Poveda had come on at half-time to replace Helder Costa. Leeds had made all their three subs so had to play on with 10 men.

However, they struck again after Poveda left the pitch to make the score 2-0 at the time this was written.

News of Poveda’s injury was relayed by Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth.

Bad timing for Poveda

This could be a real blow for Leeds, with Raphinha also possibly out after going off injured in the game against Leicester.

With Costa playing the first half of the game and Poveda replacing him for the second, it looked like the two wingers were in a direct shootout for the right-wing starting berth on Wednesday night.

If Raphinha is out and Poveda’s injury stops him playing, then Costa could make his first start since November.

However, he didn’t look brilliant to us in the first 45 minutes.

Given that he was dropped from the team and then the squad we wanted to see some real application from the winger.

However, although he looked threatening and hit the post early on, we didn’t see enough from him. He didn’t track back as much as we – or we imagine Bielsa – would have wanted.

However, he may have done enough, given what’s happened, to get the nod at Elland Road on Wednesday night.

From watching the game the Poveda injury didn’t look too good to us – hopefully, we’ll get better news later on Monday.
