Leeds ace up for 'Numpty' award on talkSPORT as footage emerges from Leicester, McCoist responds

Leeds United carried on their excellent start to the season with a 3-1 win over Leicester at the King Power on Sunday.

Patrick Bamford was the star, setting up two goals and scoring the other as Leeds clipped the wings of high-flying Leicester.

Illan Meslier continues to impress in goal but one hilarious moment from the game saw him nominated for talkSPORT’s ‘Numpty of the Week’ award.

In the second half of the game, in a bid to get Leeds back on the attack as quickly as possibly, Meslier threw the ball to Luke Ayling.

Unfortunately, Ayling was off the pitch at the time, getting treatment and the ball went straight out of play.

The Sky Sports cameras panned back to Meslier who had a big smile on his face after the incident.

Talking about it on talkSPORT (Breakfast show, Monday, 8am), Meslier was nominated for the Numpty of the Week award by producer George Sexton-Kerr.

He said, “It was a great game but in the second half, Leicester were on the attack, it broke down, Meslier spots someone, lobs the ball to the other end of the pitch, but it’s Luke Ayling who was off the pitch and getting treatment.

“The Sky cameras panned over to him and he had a smile on his face but I think something like that has to be picked up for Numpty of the Week.”

Ally McCoist responded saying, “Absolutely, but the way he handled it was perfect.”

Bargain buy

This was a brilliant moment in a game that was already delivering on entertainment.

Ayling was off the pitch but otherwise, it was a good spot by the young keeper who is always looking to turn defence into attack.

And the smile on his face shows that he’s enjoying his football at the moment.

It’s been a meteoric rise for Meslier who has taken full advantage of Kiko Casilla being banned last season.

He might not be the finished article but he’s a top Premier League keeper who only cost us £5m and that’s a massive bargain in today’s market.

Distribution is one of his strengths, although he did kick straight to a Leicester player yesterday in his bid to get things moving quickly.

He made seven saves yesterday [WhoScored] and was given a solid 7.8 rating for his display.

Keeping him fit is absolutely essential for Leeds, with only Casilla waiting in the wings – a player many Whites fans don’t want to see play for us again.
