Leeds could face PL giants in showdown for first piece of 20/21 silverware next month – report

If Leeds United win the Championship they could play Liverpool in the Community Shield at Wembley in August.

That’s one of the potential scenarios the FA is considering with the season opener possibly clashing with the Champions League and Europa League finals.

Normally, the FA Cup winners would play Liverpool and that could still be the case if Arsenal or Chelsea win the cup.

However, if Man United or Man City win the FA Cup and the Community Shield goes ahead, with a possible date of August 23 pencilled in, the Times claims the winners of the Championship could be invited to play.

It’s claimed that the Community Shield could also be used as a test event for bringing fans back into stadiums.

First 20/21 silverware for Leeds?

We think this would be poetic justice for Leeds fans who have missed out on the chance to see the run-in of one of the most exciting seasons in a long time.

If Leeds do go on and win the Championship, then playing in the Community Shield against the best side in England would be a fantastic way to usher in a new era at Elland Road.

If some Leeds fans could go to Wembley to watch it, that would be the cherry on top.

It sounds like a number of ducks have got to fall into place for that to happen but there is a precedent.

In 1971, Leicester City won the old Division Two title and were invited to play in the Shield after double winners Arsenal couldn’t play. Ironically, they went on to beat Liverpool.

What a start to life in the Premier League if Leeds could go to Wembley and beat Klopp’s side.

However, before we get too carried away, Leeds need to beat Stoke on Thursday evening to get back to the top of the league.

They’re at a real disadvantage with all their promotion rivals have already won this game week.

West Brom moved two points clear at the top after beating Derby on Wednesday. Brentford are just three points behind in third.
