Lee Hendrie reacts to ‘controversial’ Patrick Bamford incident in Leeds United v Rotherham

Lee Hendrie reacted to the “controversial” nature of Patrick Bamford celebrating as Leeds United opened the scoring against Rotherham United on Saturday (10 February).

The Whites went in front after just 10 minutes at Elland Road against the Championship’s basement boys with Bamford claiming he got the last touch, with the ball perhaps deflecting off his arm.

Phil Hay later suggested the final touch may have come off visiting defender Sean Morrison, but Hendrie – speaking live on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday (3:13pm) – said away goalkeeper Viktor Johansson was left “furious”.

“This is controversial by the way, we have to look at this because Patrick Bamford’s claiming the goal,” Hendrie said.

“They work it brilliantly from defence, Rodon plays the ball out to Kamara on the left-hand side, Firpo overlaps, he whips the ball across it’s a big deflection but you can clearly see that Bamford puts his arm out as the ball comes into the box.

“It looks really slight on the deflection. Viktor Johansson is furious, the goal’s given and Leeds are 1-0 up.”

Leeds went on to win 3-0 with Crysencio Summerville scoring twice in the second half..

Leeds United and Patrick Bamford should apologise to no one

Everyone needs to ready the Conor McGregor memes because Leeds and Patrick Bamford should apologise here…to absolutely nobody!

Look, even if there is some controversy the fact is it’s not for Leeds or Bamford to police these incidents, that would be the job of the referee and his officials so that’s just the way the cookie crumbles.

Plus, it’s not exactly as if Leeds haven’t had dodgy decisions go against them in the past is it? Who are we to be the moral arbiters of controversial referee decisions?

Patrick Bamford’s injury problems could have opened the Leeds United door for Raja Mujica in 2021-22.

The simple fact is that when you’re going for automatic promotion, at times you need to get the rub of the green and if that’s what has happened here then that’s great news for Leeds, the club’s supporters and Daniel Farke.

At some point, a decision will go against the team so for now when something goes for them you just have to be happy about it to be honest.
