Leeds United have been namechecked by Accrington Stanley chairman Andy Holt in a rant over the Premier League funding package for EFL clubs.

BBC Sport reported on its website on Friday (9 February) that the top-flight clubs were "not in a position" to complete a deal with the EFL due to issues over where the money should come from despite a £900million agreement being reached.

Responding to the news on Twitter on Saturday (10 February), Accrington chief Holt said the deal is being blocked by the 14 non-permanent members of the Premier League, but he added that it's "mind-blowing" that the "big-six" were allowed to take advantage of the FA and EFL back in 1992 when the league was revamped.

He argued that 14 former Premier League clubs, who have been in the top flight for an average of 13 years between them, should be treated as equals as he questioned why Burnley should get a vote on the "future of our game", while the likes of Leeds don't get a say on the issue.

Leeds United should get a say on the issue

This is an extremely complicated matter as some Premier League clubs are blocking a deal from happening to provide funding for the EFL.

Those top-flight clubs, who are raking in an absolute fortune every year, have a duty to help out those sides below them after they have helped make the English football pyramid what it is.

This is the best league in the world by some distance, but there is so much greed at the top, which ultimately could be the downfall of football in this country as we know it.

Holt is right that it's completely and utterly wrong that the likes of Burnley, who were only playing in the Championship last season, get a say over teams like Leeds and even former Premier League champions Leicester City.

The system is designed to benefit the big clubs and let everyone else scrap it out between themselves. It needs to change to secure the long-term future of the entire pyramid, not just the lucky few.
