Lee Hendrie: Leeds United star Willy Gnonto sent for 'cold shower' in first half after incident v Hull City
Willy Gnonto went for a “cold shower” early on in the clash between Leeds United and Hull City, according to Sky Sports News pundit Lee Hendrie.
The winger went off injured after just 21 minutes in the Championship encounter at the MKM Stadium on Wednesday (20 September).
Leeds manager Daniel Farke replaced the young Italian with fellow winger Cryscencio Summerville, with Gnonto limping off the pitch.
“Gnonto has had to go off,” Hendrie said on Sky Sports News (20 September, 8:12pm). “He had a bit of a clash in the centre of the field that obviously caused a problem.
“He tried to run it off but unfortunately he’s having a cold shower in the changing rooms. Summerville’s come on for him and you do feel they have that strength in depth on the bench.”
Huge blow
Leeds went into the clash with Hull on an impressive four-match unbeaten run in the Championship, which includes wins against Ipswich Town and Millwall, and draws against West Brom and Sheffield Wednesday.
And manager Farke is undoubtedly keen to extend that run against the Tigers, ideally with a win, but given how their opponents have started the season, a draw would not be the worst result.
However, their task has been made much harder following the huge injury blow to Gnonto, who really is one of the club’s key players. It remains to be seen how long he will be sidelined for, but it simply adds to Farke’s injury issues at Elland Road.
Fortunately, there is some strength in depth at the West Yorkshire club, with Summerville representing a very decent direct replacement for the injured Gnonto.
Still, Farke will want the exciting attacker back as soon as possible, even after the Italian’s unwanted antics in the summer transfer window.
