Journalist shares how Leeds United fans reacted before Kalvin Phillips came on v Southampton

Joe Donnohue shares that the Leeds United fans gave Kalvin Phillips a big ovation when he was seen warming up against Southampton.

The Whites midfielder has missed several months through injury this season, but now appears to be fit and ready.

He’s a favourite at Elland Road, given his Yorkshire roots and the fans let him know that, in no uncertain terms.

Via his personal Twitter account, the LeedsLive reporter wrote, “Big reception for the Yorkshire Pirlo from the Kop and corner of the West Stand. He’s out to warm up with Koch and Gelhardt. I’ll bet those are the three changes Marsch makes, injuries permitting.”

Welcome boost

Phillips has been the lynchpin of this Leeds midfield for the last two to three seasons.

When Marcelo Bielsa arrived, he converted him from a box to box midfielder to a deep lying playmaker and that’s worked wonderfully.

It even got him in the England squad and his absence has been felt this season.

The Argentine lost his job and he probably would not have had Phillips been there for the run in from January onwards.

Hopefully, Jesse Marsch gets the best out of him and convinces him to stay.

He’s one of, if not the best player at Leeds and the squad must be built around him.

Let’s see what the future holds for him at Elland Road and whether he stays on beyond this summer.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites are leading the race to complete a major signing and have already opened talks to seal a £25m deal.
