Jeff Stelling slams 'awful' Illan Meslier in Leeds United v Newcastle United

Jeff Stelling blasted Illan Meslier after he conceded from Jonjo Shelvey’s free-kick as Leeds United lost 1-0 to Newcastle United at Elland Road on Saturday.

Meslier, 21, made superb saves to deny both Shelvey and Chris Wood in the first half at Elland Road.

However, he should have done better when Shelvey’s second-half free-kick beat him, and Stelling made that clear.

Tim Sherwood, speaking on Sky Sports News on Saturday [22 January, 04:46pm], also was baffled by Meslier.

He said: “It’s just gone through Meslier into the far corner.”

Stelling added: “Newcastle take the lead, it’s one goal to nil.

“It’s awful goalkeeping from Meslier, that’s for sure. Jonjo Shelvey gets the goal.”

Not good enough

We’ve been crying out for Leeds to sort out their goalkeeping department because the oldest player there is 21-year-old Meslier.

It’s fair to say that the Frenchman’s performances have gotten worse since the summer, when Leeds lost Kiko Casilla and signed another youngster in Kristoffer Klaesson to replace him.

Klaesson isn’t putting any pressure on Meslier for his spot in the starting line-up whereas with Casilla, there was at least someone who would play every now and then, especially in the cups.

While Leeds have a goalkeeping coach, they don’t have an experienced shot-stopper in the squad who can help out at Thorp Arch and really help steer Meslier in the right direction.

The French goalkeeper’s positioning at set-pieces really worries us.

We’ve seen several times at corners where he’s ended up standing behind the goal when a shot is aimed at him while you could see that he was all over the place from that Shelvey free-kick.

There must be an experienced goalkeeper out there who’d be happy to be our second-choice this month.

In other Leeds United news, Leeds have been told to pay over £6million to sign a “terrific” player who’s been tipped to move on.
