Illan Meslier slammed live on air after what happened in Preston 1-1 Leeds

Chris Iwelumo slammed Illan Meslier for his error as Preston North End opened the scoring against Leeds United on Saturday.

The Whites fell 1-0 down at Deepdale on 14 December thanks to a first-half Brad Potts strike but the goalkeeper should have done better.

The Frenchman got two hands on the ball but couldn’t keep it out in a moment which didn’t go down well with ex-Scotland international Iwelumo live on talkSPORT.

He said: “I think Meslier has to do better. He has to do better at his near post. I think he gets two hands on it but pushes it into his own goal.

“He’ll know that he’s made an error.”

An own goal from Jack Whatmough in the 93rd minute salvaged Leeds a 1-1 draw at Deepdale.

Illan Meslier makes mistake for Leeds United v Preston

The 24-year-old has always had a mistake in him but often makes up with that with some top-class saves. His error against Sunderland is case and point of exactly that.

Meslier wasn’t handed the chance to make a positive impact in the opening stages at Deepdale but did have a moment to forget.

Leeds didn’t create much and often found themselves frustrated as the home side were able to easily keep Daniel Farke’s side at bay.

That frustration was only made worse when the goalkeeper palmed an effort into the bottom corner to give Paul Heckingbottom’s side the lead.

Given that the Frenchman has been linked with a move away from Elland Road, he has hardly done himself any favours.

The shot-stopper really needs to improve and get these sorts of errors out of his system because they will ultimately cost the Whites dearly, even if they did hit back for a point in Lancashire.

In other Leeds United news, Daniel Farke risks upsetting this “second to none” star, a contract extension is a no-brainer.
