Junior Firpo's contract situation has been swirling ever since he entered the final 12 months of his deal at Leeds United.

The 28-year-old's current deal is set to expire at the end of the 2024/25 campaign but he has continued to be a key member of the squad, starting 15 of the Whites' 20 league matches so far.

In that time, he has notched one goal and three assists, showing just how attacking he can be on international duty, and has now become one of the most experienced players at Elland Road.

Despite this, there is still no real update on the Dominican Republic international's future in West Yorkshire, and Daniel Farke's recent comments will only add frustration to the situation.

Speaking to the media [13 December], quoted by LeedsLive, Farke said: "No time to discuss this with so many games. There will be a moment to speak about this topic. He had a difficult start to life here.

"Developed fantastically. Taken on more responsibility. Much too early to speak about anything beyond the summer. Let's focus on getting fit again."

Junior Firpo future unclear as Leeds United contract runs down

This answer is desperately unhelpful, and while managers cannot be expected to give out behind-the-scenes information about players, it's such a media-trained response.

If this is the stance of the hierarchy, waiting until the season finishes, the club surely risk upsetting the full-back, who has been dubbed "second to none" by Farke [Leeds United YouTube], as Leeds seek promotion back to the Premier League.

Firpo is a crucial member of the squad despite a rocky start to his life in Yorkshire and the uncertainty over a contract extension could make him question whether he should remain at the club.

Of course, promotion back to the Premier League could mean a number of new signings during the summer but players who are experienced will be needed to stay afloat in the first division.

It is certainly a situation to keep one eye on, but if the club are set to follow in Farke's footsteps, it may not be solved until the summer.
