Firpo and Shackleton doubts for Leeds United v Leicester

Marcelo Bielsa has cast doubts over the fitness of Junior Firpo and Jamie Shackleton ahead of Leeds United versus Leicester at Elland Road on Sunday.

Speaking to the media on Friday, Bielsa confirmed that Patrick Bamford, Luke Ayling and Robin Koch “remain unavailable” for the upcoming clash against the Foxes [Yorkshire Evening Post].

Later in the press conference, Bielsa was quizzed on the fitness of left-back Firpo and utility player Shackleton and he’s suggested both face late fitness tests before the team is selected.

“From here on now until Sunday I will have a clearer vision,” said Bielsa, as quoted by the YEP when asked about the duo.

Potential issues

Bielsa’s team news update on Friday suggests that he could be without as many as five players for the clash against Leicester on Sunday.

Out of those five players, three of them are nailed-on starters in Bamford, Ayling and Firpo.

Hopefully there’s positive news regarding Firpo and Shackleton before we play against Brendan Rodgers’ side on Sunday because as things stand, it makes for grim reading.

Leeds have struggled so far this season.

We’ve beaten just three teams in regular time in all competitions – Crewe, Watford and Norwich.

Leicester are obviously better than all of them and while the East Midlands outfit hasn’t had an amazing start to the season, they’re still a team that could really punish us.

Jamie Vardy is someone who we’re looking at with a lot of fear.

Diego Llorente and Liam Cooper haven’t been at their best lately with Llorente’s poor marking costing us a goal at Norwich and Cooper gifting Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah a goal in the Carabao Cup last week.

Vardy is someone who will punish defenders if they make the smallest of mistakes and if we’re missing out starting full-backs, we could be in for a world of hurt.

It wouldn’t be a shock to see Bielsa name three-at-the-back in order to further nullify the threat of the Leicester attack on Sunday and take some of the pressure off the stand-in full-backs.

In other Leeds United news, this Elland Road ace may not be in the long-term plans at the club.
