Dion Dublin: Leeds United were robbed of win v Southampton

Dion Dublin believes that Leeds United should have been given a penalty in the dying stages of the 1-1 draw against Southampton.

Joe Gelhardt looked like he was brought down in the dying stages of the game and the Whites players were asking for a penalty.

Had that been given, they probably would’ve scored a late goal and sealed the three points.

Discussing this incident on Premier League’s Weekend Review, Dublin, a BBC Match of the Day pundit, said, “If it’s at halfway line, it would’ve been given. I’m surprised he gave the decision against them. A crucial stage of the game too.”

Penalty?

Given the season Leeds have had and their rotten luck with injuries, they would hate to see such decisions go against them.

It seemed like a clear penalty and the referee probably was scared to give it at that stage of the game as it would change the outcome of it.

However, had he given it, the referee would’ve still had another chance to have a look at the VAR monitor and then decide whether he stands with his original decision.

This was a shambolic decision and we cannot believe was not overruled.

Dublin is right. If it happens anywhere else on the pitch, it’s a foul, then why not in the penalty area?

The laws of the game certainly do not state that the 18-yard box is a different area and different laws need to be applied for actions in there.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites are leading the race to complete a major signing and have already opened talks to seal a £25m deal.
