‘Delete this’, ‘Outrageous’ – Official Leeds tweet has got plenty of opposition fans hopping mad

The official Leeds United Twitter account posted a message that has really wound up opposition fans this week.

It said, “Reading are the latest club to not sell out their away allocation, so extra tickets have now been made available to Leeds fans in the West Stand”.

It’s great news for Leeds fans who hadn’t managed to get a ticket and a seemingly innocuous message, you might think.

However, it was jumped on by a journalist who said that Reading were the “latest club not willing to get fleeced by Leeds who continue to charge Premier League prices for Championship football.”

Athletic journalist Michael Cox was unimpressed by the “latest club” phrasing in the tweet, which we’ll admit was a little antagonistic.

There were plenty of fans from other clubs who piled onto the tweet to agree with them.

The price of football tickets is an issue. £39 is a lot, there are no two ways about that.

However, Leeds have a plan to get back into the Premier League and money is tight. Wages have increased massively under Andrea Radrizzani and profit & sustainability levels have already stopped the club investing more heavily in players.

Unlike other clubs, Leeds will not break these rules.

Leeds fans get charged the same to sit in the same stand. And, if away clubs don’t want to support their club in the same way Leeds fans do, there are plenty of Leeds fans who will snap the tickets up.

Elland Road will be sold out on Saturday and there were plenty of Leeds fans who were pointing out that this is one of Reading’s biggest games of the season.

These opposition fans weren’t having any of it though…

Should football tickets be cheaper? No doubt. Families are getting priced out of going to games but this is an issue with the game, and with wider society, not Leeds.

Want the best tickets for a West End musical? That’ll be £250 then. Saying that people should pay if the demand is there is all well and good but football shouldn’t just be for the rich.

This isn’t a Leeds problem though. And we think, pound for pound, you’re still getting better value watching football at Elland Road than almost any other stadium in the Championship.

One Leeds fan put it brilliantly when he said, “The fact is that P&S means clubs must maximise their income. 1,000 missing away fans don’t justify having to drop the price in the entire stand, as EFL rules would demand.”
