Chris Sutton and Robbie Savage stunned by 'horrific' incident in Leeds United v West Ham

Chris Sutton and Robbie Savage were shocked by West Ham’s first goal being allowed to stand against Leeds United on Sunday.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men were dumped out of the FA Cup at the London Stadium after they went behind to a Manuel Lanzini goal that was closely looked at by VAR.

However, even though Jarrod Bowen clearly had an impact on play after being in an offside position, the goal was allowed to stand.

Speaking on BBC 5 Live Sport, Sutton couldn’t believe what he’d seen.

As shown in a clip on Twitter, the former Blackburn striker said: “The fact of the matter is it goes to VAR, anybody watching the game – Leeds fans, West Ham fans – everybody saw the same thing that Bowen was in an offside position so why was the goal not ruled out?

“First goal of the game, a big goal, what’s going on? I really don’t know.

“There’s no excuse for that, that was horrific from the VAR official.”

Savage added later in the clip: “I’ve just seen it on social media – unbelievable.”

Shocking

It’s been over 24 hours since the match ended and we’re still shocked as to how that goal was allowed to stand.

Nikola Vlasic touched the ball forward while Bowen was in an offside position and regardless of whether Bowen touched the ball or not, he went in for the challenge to win it and had an impact on Illan Meslier’s goalkeeping.

It was rotten officiating and Bowen clearly made a serious play for the ball from an offside position. There is simply no debate about that.

VAR must have come to the decision that Bowen was offside too without having to use any of their controversial lines as no lines were drawn onto the replay as Vlasic touched the ball towards the goal.

Therefore, the debate must have been about whether Bowen had an impact on play but that’s just crazy because he ended up in a coming together with at least two other players as he attempted to win the loose ball in the Leeds penalty area.

Leo Hjelde did so well to make a tackle on Vlasic in the build-up to that goal so he can feel incredibly hard-done-by to see his good work go to waste.

And it set the tone for the rest of the match as Leeds eventually lost another goal as they pressed for a late equaliser.

Ridiculous.

In other Leeds United news, bids have been made for this Leeds player as a commentator dropped a mid-game update in the loss at West Ham.
