Bielsa delivers injury update on Hernandez, shares whether Leeds man can play on Boxing Day

So, the unbeaten run falls in London. No surprise there but Leeds United were really unlucky not to get something out of the game this afternoon.

Marcelo Bielsa said as much in his post-match press conference and also confirmed that Pablo Hernandez would be out of the Boxing Day clash against Preston following his injury.

Leeds went behind to a dubious penalty today and had to play almost the entire match without talisman Hernandez.

Leeds deserved something from the second half but fell to a Josh Onomah goal after Patrick Bamford had scored his 10th of the season.

They almost salvaged a point at the death but Aleksandar Mitrovic proved he’s got it at both ends of the pitch as he made a brilliant goal-line clearance.

Talking after the game, manager Marcelo Bielsa said, “We played against one of the more powerful opponents.

“We defended well, they scored after one corner and with a penalty.

“They had just one more chance and we had seven or eight to win the match. We played with great attacking.” [Athletic]

Bielsa also gave a short update on Hernandez saying, “It’s a muscular problem” and adding that he wouldn’t be fit for the Boxing Day game against Preston.

That’s a real blow for Leeda and for Hernandez who hasn’t been able to get going yet this season. Hopefully, he’s not going to be out for an extended period.

West Brom only managed a draw and there’s still a nine-point gap back to third so it’s not the worst day of football for Leeds, but after dropping points against Cardiff and losing this afternoon, fans are getting understandably twitchy.

Would fans have taken a nine-point gap back to third at Christmas at the start of the season? Absolutely. Let’s focus on that.
