'Astonishing': Jeff Stelling reacts to Leeds promotion race, says one game could upset applecart

Jeff Stelling has called the Championship “astonishing” as the promotion race heated up after the majority of teams played their games on Saturday.

Leeds United play Swansea on Sunday lunchtime and have the opportunity to move three points clear at the top of the table with a better goal difference.

Brentford won again, their seventh successive victory, but West Brom could only manage a draw with Blackburn.

The Baggies play fourth-placed Fulham next and Stelling thinks that game “could certainly put the pigeons among the cat”.

Talking on Soccer Saturday (Sky Sports, Saturday, 5pm) Stelling said, “It’s tight at both ends of the table. Leeds stay top with 81 points. West Brom go level but behind on goal difference. Only one goal different but it’s a disappointment as far as they’re concerned.

“Brentford are breathing down everyone’s necks after six straight wins since they returned.

“They had Derby today and everyone thought that would be a stumbling block. They won that comfortably and they have a better goal difference than West Brom. 10 goal better goal difference and West Brom play Fulham in fourth next. That could certainly put the pigeons among the cat.”

Talking about Brentford, Stelling said, “The side they’re chasing are West Brom. They’re chasing Leeds as well but they’re chasing West Bromwich Albion who have 81 points and are behind Leeds on goal difference.”

Stelling went on to look at the race for the play-off places and said that all the sides down to Blackburn in 12th could still potentially make the top six.

He called it a “mad scramble” and then added, “What a division the Championship is, it’s absolutely astonishing.”

The West Brom result was absolutely massive for Leeds.

If Leeds can win today then they move three points clear at the top and six points clear of Brentford with just three games left.

We would have a better goal difference than West Brom which could easily be worth an extra point at the end of the season.

It would mean two wins from the last three would definitely get Leeds over the line.

West Brom then have to play Fulham and we’d be seriously concerned if we were in their position now.

Brentford look absolutely unstoppable and while you’d have to say it’s still unlikely, they could win their last three.

That’s phenomenal and if they do that then we could see them pipping the Baggies – their goal difference is way better.

If Fulham beat West Brom and Brentford win all their games, they’d go up automatically.

It really is astonishing stuff.
