Why Leeds United's Dominic Calvert-Lewin wowed Ally McCoist without being 'dangerous' vs Arsenal
Leeds United's Dominic Calvert-Lewin impressed Ally McCoist against Arsenal on Saturday.
The Whites were unable to get anything at the Emirates Stadium at the weekend, as they lost 2-1 to the defending Premier League champions.
Gabriel Gudmundsson and James Justin combined for the first goal of the contest, but it was the hosts who were able to turn the game around in the latter stages of the second 45 for the win.
Calvert-Lewin was unable to get a single shot off in the game, as Daniel Farke's side created just 0.62 in terms of xG.
Though the striker had a quiet day in front of goal, he worked hard to create chances for his teammates around him.
That's exactly why Calvert-Lewin impressed McCoist, who has offered his verdict on the Leeds forward's performance.
Ally McCoist calls Dominic Calvert-Lewin 'terrific' after display vs Arsenal
Calvert-Lewin has had another strong start to the season for Leeds, and earned an England call-up before the international break.
Though Thomas Tuchel didn't give the 29-year-old loads of game time for the Three Lions, he remains a regular starter under Farke at Elland Road.
Calvert-Lewin is arguably in his prime right now, and will be hoping to beat his impressive tally of 15 goals for the Whites last season.
While speaking on talkSPORT this Monday, McCoist shared his thoughts on Calvert-Lewin's performance.
McCoist said: "Calvert-Lewin, I thought he was absolutely terrific. I thought he led the line, I know it's a contradiction, without being exceptionally dangerous. He was very, very good."
Andy Townsend replied: "Without looking like he's really going to score goals, but I tell you what, Ally, it'll take you a long way if you've got a striker that's charging about, holding it up and very competitive."
McCoist thought that the changing point in the game was Arsenal's quality of substitutes, but thought the Whites could have walked away with a result at one point in the match.
Farke won't be too downbeat about the performance, as fixtures don't get much harder than Arsenal away.
What Arsenal loss means for Lukas Nmecha
Lukas Nmecha is reportedly fighting for a new contract at Leeds, with his contract set to expire next summer.
The former Manchester City prospect could be sold by the Whites in January so that they can at least get a sum of money, instead of letting him go for free in the summer.
But Farke lined up with Noah Okafor playing off Calvert-Lewin once again in the loss to Arsenal.
The German head coach has rarely played a two-striker formation this season, and when he has, Nmecha hasn't featured.
He didn't really inspire when he came off the bench either.
The 27-year-old may be headed for the exit doors in LS11.
