Weston McKennie being held back at Leeds United after USA development - Sky Sports pundit
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...
Paul Robinson has suggested Weston McKennie is being held back at Leeds United after the midfielder scored twice whilst on international duty with the USA.
The 24-year-old netted a brace in the space of five first-half minutes during the USMNT's 7-1 CONCACAF Nations League win over Grenada.
Robinson has claimed the American is an "all-round" midfielder who could operate in a more advanced role if required at Elland Road.
"He's capable of doing that, but that's an area they've actually got a lot of quality in," Robinson exclusively told MOT Leeds News.
"I think he's the all-round midfielder, but I think at Leeds he plays a little bit more with the shackles on. He's tied down in that defensive midfield role alongside Roca.
"He's a player who can play anywhere in the middle of the park, in more advanced roles and in deeper areas. I have no doubt he could add more goals but he's not allowed to play that way in Leeds' team, he's more of a defensive midfielder."
McKennie still has one more international fixture to complete before he returns to Elland Road with the USA set to take on El Salvador on Tuesday (28 March).
In other Leeds United news, the club are ready to offer a new contract to one first-team star whose deal is up in 2024.
