Was Leeds goalkeeper James Trafford at fault for the goals England conceded vs Spain?

James Trafford was back in the England starting line-up on Saturday night as the Three Lions lost 3-2 to Spain at Wembley.

After joining Leeds United in a club-record deal from Manchester City in the summer, Trafford's performances for the Yorkshire giants have been widely heralded.

The 23-year-old's strong club form led to Thomas Tuchel naming him in goals for England's Nations League opener against the 2026 World Cup champions.

However, Trafford's night got off to a bad start when a Marc Guehi mistake led to Lamine Yamal opening the scoring in the second minute.

England recoverd to go in 2-1 up at half-time but Harry Kane's missed penalty was then followed by two more Spain goals through Alex Baena and Mikel Oyarzabal.

But could Trafford have done much more to keep the Spaniards at bay?

Ultimately, it was horrendous defending that caused England to concede three times to Spain.

Guehi's early shocker was bad enough but his Manchester City teammate Nico O'Reilly then did something similar in the second half for Spain to pull it back to 2-2.

Guehi was then completely out of position when Oyarzabal managed to score by lifting the ball over Trafford, who was pretty much left exposed for all three goals.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Robinson said there was "nothing he can do" about Oyarzabal's winner.

Matthew Upson had earlier said that it would have been "so hard" for Trafford to deal with Baena's goal.

How did Trafford perform overall?

After Yamal's opener, Trafford was called upon to deny Ferran Torres from doubling Spain's lead.

He made a good save in a one-on-one situation, where the Spain forward was no doubt favourite to come out on top.

Overall, Trafford probably performed as expected.

He couldn't have done much about Spain's goals because of either them being good finishes or him being put into no-win situations because of horrific defending by the outfielders.

Trafford will start against Czechia on Tuesday but Tuchel's number one goalkeeper still looks likely to be Jordan Pickford - for now.
