The record Callum Mills just broke for Leeds United U21s after remarkable display vs Barnsley

Callum Mills scored a hat-trick for Leeds United's Under-21s on Tuesday.

The Whites' U21s have had a strong start to the season and are now unbeaten in four after seeing out a victory against Barnsley.

Scott Gardner's side beat the Tykes 4-3 away from Thorp Arch in a Football League Trophy group-stage match.

Mills grabbed himself three goals and the match ball, scoring in the 19th, 41st and 70th minutes, as Josh McDonald also got on the scoresheet.

The U21s had a 4-0 lead up until the 80th minute, when a flurry of three goals in seven minutes left the youngsters feeling anxious.

However, Mills' brilliance was enough to get the job done, as the Leeds gem has now put his name into the history books with his goals.

Mills had yet to score this season up until his three against Barnsley.

The attacking midfielder played 26 times for the U18s last term, scoring six times and assisting another four goals.

He grabbed a 9.7 rating on FotMob for his performance against the Tykes, but could have had four goals after missing another big chance in the game.

He won four ground duels, made two tackles and two clearances in a 37-touch masterclass from the teenager.

As highlighted by Leeds fan and Opta's Jonny Cooper on X, Mills became the youngest hat-trick scorer in the entire history of the Football League Trophy at 18 years and three days.

Daniel Farke already stated in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Crystal Palace draw that he would use the international break to give his attention to youngsters when he could.

Perhaps Mills has now done enough to attract the attention of Farke.

The attacker has now spoken out after this remarkable performance.

What Mills said after hat-trick heroics

Mills is one of the younger players to feature for Leeds' U21s, but is clearly way ahead of others given his age.

He played against several Barnsley players who regularly start in League One for the Tykes, and deserves extra credit for his performance, along with his teammates.

Speaking to BBC Sport West Yorkshire after the game, Mills was evidently delighted with his hat-trick.

He said: "It's great to get three goals and get my name out there; there will be lots of people watching.

"It's more physical, but it's good to play these games so you're used to proper men's football.

"The feeling is good in the changing room; we just need to keep going and not get complacent. Hopefully I'll get another three goals in the next game!"

Thorp Arch has produced many top talents over the years, namely Archie and Harry Gray in recent times, and Mills could be the next breakthrough star.
