Leeds United striker could now be on his way to Sunderland instead of Wigan Athletic, according to recent reports in the English press.

Northern Echo journalists Scott Wilson and Dominic Shaw claim that the Black Cats are making a "big" push to sign him ahead of the transfer deadline.

He is certain to leave on loan, but his destination is still undecided and Sunderland are looking to capitalise on it.

Via Twitter, Wilson wrote, "From Dominic Shaw, Leeds' loan dilemma as Sunderland make a big push to try to sign Joe Gelhardt on loan."

Shaw also added some extra information, saying, "Joe Gelhardt will be moving on loan before next Tuesday's deadline - just a case of where #LUFC decide he goes. Sunderland have made a renewed late push for the striker and a few factors could work in their favour."

Sunderland better

We understand why Gelhardt would want to go to Wigan, but it will be a better and more interesting challenge at Sunderland.

Wigan was the place that moulded him as a youngster and he does have fond memories of his time spent there.

However, they are rooted to the bottom of the table and all that will be at stake for them this season will be survival.

Leeds United

That is a very similar scenario to what Leeds are currently in while at the Stadium of Light, it'll be a more interesting prospect.

They're in the top half of the table, have the tag of a fallen giant and are looking to return to the Premier League this season.

Play-offs are very much a possibility for the Black Cats and signing Gelhardt will give them a great chance to get there and it'll also be some responsibility on his shoulders which can only be good for him.
