Sean Longstaff proved one thing to Daniel Farke in Leeds United loss vs Wrexham

Sean Longstaff was on the scoresheet as Leeds United were beaten by Wrexham in their opening pre-season fixture.

The Championship outfit were 3-2 victors against the Whites in Tampa, Florida, on Saturday.

While it was disappointing for the Whites to suffer defeat, the usual caveats must be taken into account.

Leeds are still building up their fitness, and this fixture will be good just to get some minutes in the legs.

The real test comes when Leeds play their Premier League opener at Nottingham Forest on 22 August, of course.

But Longstaff certainly proved one thing to Daniel Farke, as he put in a good performance for the Whites against Steve Parkinson's side.

Has Sean Longstaff staked a Leeds claim?

Leeds paid Newcastle United around £12million to bring Longstaff to Elland Road last July.

Longstaff penned a four-year contract with Leeds, but sometimes found himself on the periphery under Farke last term.

However, the 28-year-old proved to Farke that he has the fight to stake a claim for a first-team spot this season.

Longstaff not only took his goal well, but he set up Joel Piroe for his goal as well, and was a constant danger around the edge of the area.

He was also pressing and probing and trying to break Wrexham down, and it was an encouraging display from the midfield man.

Sean Longstaff has Leeds fight on his hands

MOT Leeds News has previously covered how Sean Longstaff may have a fight on his hands at Leeds this season.

Midfield is an area that is already well stocked at Elland Road, with Ethan Ampadu, Ao Tanaka, Anton Stach, and Ilia Gruev.

When you throw in the fact that Leeds are also still trying to sign Shea Charles from Southampton, then the competition is going to be fierce in the engine room.

But fair play to Longstaff, who only started 10 Premier League games last season (23 top-flight appearances in total), because this was a message that he is ready for the fight.

If Leeds are going to be successful and push on from a 14th-place finish in the top flight last term, then they need everyone firing on all cylinders and pushing hard for minutes.
