Sam Matterface may need his own eyes retrained after dreadful take on Leeds' James Trafford

Leeds United goalkeeper James Trafford's England start at the weekend is still causing debate.

Trafford came in for his first competitive appearance under Thomas Tuchel for the UEFA Nations League clash with Spain on Saturday.

That was also just the 23-year-old's third senior cap overall, with Jordan Pickford the undoubted first choice for nearly a decade now.

Tuchel has already confirmed Trafford will also start Tuesday night's match away at Czechia, before Pickford returns for the next two games.

Trafford may have conceded three times in a 3-2 loss to Spain, but the general consensus was he was not at fault for those goals.

There are definitely strengths Trafford can bring to the side over Pickford, but commentator Sam Matterface clearly cannot see it.

Matterface was commentating on the England versus Spain clash for ITV on Saturday.

He therefore got to see Trafford's display up close at Wembley.

Pickford is very consistent for England, but there have been question marks over his distribution for a while now.

For a while he was considered the best English goalkeeper around with his feet, but that is not longer the case.

Speaking on talkSPORT's Premier League All Access podcast on Monday, Matterface suggested to Troy Deeney that Pickford is better than Trafford with his feet.

"We learned that Jordan Pickford is very, very good with his feet and that James Trafford isn't up to that standard," he said.

"One of the problems England had problems playing out from the back [against Spain] is because they got themselves in knots and were less secure because Trafford's not as secure with his feet.

"He's a brilliant goalkeeper and a brilliant shot-stopper, but your eyes get retrained when you see what we saw and compare to what we've seen from Pickford."

Perhaps it's Matterface's eyes that need retraining because Trafford attempted the sixth-most passes (34) of any England player and completed 88 per cent of those.

Trafford was accurate with six of his nine long-ball attempts, too, while there is further evidence to suggest this take is just wrong.

Who is better with their feet: Trafford or Pickford?

When used for Man City last season - admittedly mainly in the cups - Trafford had a 74.33 per cent pass-succession rate.

Pickford's, for comparison, was around 62 per cent.

Trafford has often been praised for his ability to use both feet and pick out a pass.

It's why Pep Guardiola initially intended to make him Man City's number one.

Pickford has never really let his country down, but that is a different debate.

If Trafford is to get into the side ahead of the Everton keeper, it is because he can offer Tuchel something different beyond shot-stopping.

Matterface can't see that strength to Trafford's game, but he will get another chance to show it in Prague in midweek.
