Phil Hay has shared his disbelief at Illan Meslier's howler as Sunderland and Leeds United drew 2-2 at the Stadium of Light on Friday (4 October).

Daniel Farke's side were moments away from three big points in the EFL Championship.

However, a shocking moment from Meslier late on in stoppage time cost the Whites the win, with one of the goalkeeper's teammates in particular fuming at full-time.

Reacting to the goal via his personal X account on Saturday (5 October), Hay wrote, "This is still so weird man".

Illan Meslier howler costs Leeds United against Sunderland

There is a lot to unpack when it comes to this mistake from the 27-year-old goalkeeper.

Jeff Stelling was not best pleased with the reaction of the shot-stopper's teammates. However, it would be hard to blame any Leeds player on the pitch for not feeling frustrated at that moment.

After 90-plus minutes of tiresome work, which left your side moments away from a famous victory, to see it all thrown away would no doubt be infuriating.

As an innocuous ball bounced into the box it looked as if Meslier was going to gobble it up and in the process claim all three points for the visitors. However, instead, the ball somehow bypassed him, almost as if it was in slow motion.

Therefore, it is safe to assume that the mood on the team bus back to Leeds was not a pleasant one.

Goalkeepers make mistakes, it happens. However, as Hay alluded to, this one in particular seems odd, and fans will no doubt be keen for some sort of explanation.

Whether or not that explanation arrives is a different story.
