Phil Hay shares PSV stance on Cody Gakpo as Leeds United remain keen

PSV attacker Cody Gakpo may be out of the price range of Leeds United should he go on to have a good World Cup in Qatar this year.

According to The Athletic's Phil Hay, Leeds would like to go in for him again but the Dutch side are unwilling to commit anything until Qatar 2022.

There's a good chance that if has a good tournament, he would want to join a Champions League club, making it impossible for Leeds to sign him.

Hay wrote, "They like him and would like to go back for him but PSV are unlikely to commit to anything until after the World Cup. If Gakpo has a very good one and impresses in Qatar, alongside a strong domestic season, I can't help feeling that he'll be out of Leeds' price range and looking for a Champions League move."

Missed opportunity?

Gakpo, who has been labelled "phenomenal" by performance analysts EBL, may well go down as "What could've been" at Leeds as signing him again now seems highly unlikely for them.

This summer was their chance to sign him, but their pursuit of other targets saw him close in on moves to other clubs, one of them being Manchester United.

It was clear that he wanted out and once a move to Old Trafford looked off the cards, Leeds should've instantly gone in for his services.

However, they waited slightly longer than they should've and no club is going to lower the valuation on deadline for one of their prized assets.

Had Leeds been a Champions League, Gakpo may have forced PSV to accept a lower bid, but it seemed like he had decided to stay put in Holland.

Hopefully, Leeds remain in constant touch with the player and his representatives and start making serious moves again closer to the January transfer window.
