Phil Hay has stated that winger Tyler Roberts' future at Leeds United could be decided this summer.

In the latest episode of Athletic's The Phil Hay Show, the panel discussed the futures of several players at Leeds United, but Tyler Roberts was the one name they spent a lot of time deliberating over.

The 22-year-old has made 13 league appearances for the Whites this season, but has only started in three of them and only played the full 90 in the game against Wolves on Friday night.

He didn't impress then.

However, Hay believes that the Argentine still rates the winger, and will want him at the club should he himself extend his contract at the end of the season.

Hay said, "I’ve always felt that he’s a player with talent, and I think Leeds have thought that as well.

"Bielsa obviously likes him and obviously rates him. But it’s a big period, this, for him now, because he’s going to have 12 months left when they get to the summer.

"If Bielsa’s staying, he’s surely going to be one of them he's keeping hold of."

Roberts should stay

Roberts' contract expires in 2022 and given his age, Bielsa and the Leeds hierarchy surely see him as one for the future. The hope is that he improves in the next few years and start games every week for us.

While his performances in the league have been relatively mediocre thus far, he is an extremely versatile and athletic player - something Bielsa wants in a player.

Roberts showed flashes of that at Molineux on Friday night but, so far, he seems unable to produce his top form consistently.

That's something he's going to have to do sooner rather than later, but if anyone can get the best out of him, Bielsa can.

Roberts been at the club since the Argentine took over and despite his patchy form is an important asset to bring off the bench in the latter stages of the game.

Unless he has aspirations of being a first-team starter immediately, we think we can expect to see him at Elland Road for the foreseeable future.
