Nico Elvedi involved in handball drama as Swiss media reacts to Leeds defender display vs North Macedonia

Leeds United defender Nico Elvedi played all 90 minutes as Switzerland beat North Macedonia 3-0 on Saturday.

The 29-year-old joined the Whites from Borussia Monchengladbach in August and has already settled well into Daniel Farke's backline at Elland Road.

In his first five appearances for the Whites, the Yorkshire giants have conceded just four goals with Elvedi on the pitch, keeping a clean sheet in their final league game before the international break against Crystal Palace.

And he was shutting out opposing attackers again on Saturday as Switzerland opened their Nations League campaign with a routine 3-0 win away in Skopje.

However, there have been some odd reactions to Elvedi's display in the Swiss media.

Elvedi was heavily involved in Switzerland's second goal against North Macedonia.

Swiss newspaper Tages-Anzeiger detailed his role, saying: "Elvedi gets involved, launching [Zachary] Athekame down the right, who immediately provides an assist on his debut. In the middle, [Zeki] Amdouni, the man with the top scoring record, slots it home."

Blick, for some reason, dubbed the Leeds man as "underemployed" by the Swiss national team in their victory over the Macedonians.

The Leeds ace will, however, have had his heart in his mouth in the 59th minute when the ball hit his arm in the penalty box.

Tages-Anzeiger said: "[Macedonia] keep up the pressure, and when [Manuel] Akanji tries to clear again, he hits Elvedi's arm with the ball. he kicks the ball against Elvedi’s arm. Obviously, no penalty, even though a North Macedonian member of staff sees it differently and is shown a yellow card."

What were Elvedi's stats vs North Macedonia?

It was no doubt a solid display by Elvedi, but it was certainly helped by North Macedonia being ridiculously poor on the night.

The home side mustered just two shots at goal throughout the 90 minutes, generating an xG of 0.05.

Elvedi definitely played a role in keeping the hosts quiet, with stats by Sofascore showing he won the only tackle he challenged for, made one interception and completed five clearances.

The ex-Gladbach ace also made four recoveries, won both of his two ground duels and won one of the two aerial duels he contended.

On the ball, Elvedi completed two key passes and had a 90 per cent pass accuracy.

With the ball at his feet, he was brilliant, and definitely played a big role in the Swiss victory.
