Mark Clattenburg shares verdict on Newcastle penalty shout v Leeds United

Mark Clattenburg has claimed that Newcastle should have had a penalty in their 5-2 defeat against Leeds United on Wednesday.

Callum Wilson was brought down in the box by Liam Cooper in the second half, but both the officials and the VAR waved those claims away.

The score was 2-1 at that moment of the game, and the Whites went on to finish off the Magpies in ruthless style at Elland Road.

The former Premier League referee was reacting to the decision on Amazon Prime's coverage of the game, claiming it should have been given.

He said, "What happens is, as the ball comes across, there's a duel between Liam Cooper and Callum Wilson, and what we've got to establish is, does Liam Cooper get a touch on the ball?

"The challenge comes in from Cooper from behind, and with his second leg, he catches Callum Wilson's leg and therefore, trips him up and it should have been a penalty kick."

It wasn't as clear as Clattenburg is making out.

Wilson went down very theatrically, and there wasn't that much contact made between either player, and that is why it wasn't given.

No player was dispossessed more on the entire pitch than Wilson was according to WhoScored, with the Whites keeping the main threat quiet for the majority of the game.

Wilson will have been increasingly frustrated, but if that was given, Leeds would not have been very happy with the decision.

If that one would have been given, there could have been questions asked about other decisions this season, such as the numerous handball shouts in the past two home games.

It wasn't given, and the Whites ended up cruising to victory, so it wouldn't have made too much of a difference to the final score.
