'Lovely moment' noted in Leeds win vs Newcastle as fans chant for Gary Speed

Leeds United and Newcastle United fans paid tribute to the late Gary Speed during Monday's Premier League clash.

Speed was tragically found dead at his home at the age of 42 in November 2011, when he was manager of the Wales national team.

His death had a profound effect on the world of football, and led to an outpouring of support for a figure who was held in huge regard.

Speed was a hugely popular figure at Leeds, with whom he won the old First Division title in 1992 before the inception of the Premier League.

He was also a fan-favourite with the Newcastle fanbase, and he played in two FA Cup finals during his time with the Magpies.

And there was a "lovely moment" spotted during Leeds' 4-1 Premier League on Monday between both sets of fans.

What did Leeds and Newcastle fans do for Gary Speed?

On the pitch, Leeds ran out comfortable winners on the evening as Newcastle proved no match for the hosts.

Ao Tanaka's strike caused an own goal from Lewis Miley, before Jayden Bogle doubled the lead - albeit Dominic Calvert-Lewin will have something to say about that.

Calvert-Lewin did get a deserved goal before half-time, and Noah Okafor made sure of the win with a well-executed goal in the second half.

Bazoumana Toure scored a late consolation for Newcastle in the only blip on Leeds' card on the evening.

While there was the usual barbs between opposing fans, there was a nice moment when the fanbases came together.

Explaining what both sets of supporters did, BBC Sport reporter Ciaran Kelly wrote: "Both sets of supporters join in as they sing "Oh Gary, Gary!" in tribute to the late Gary Speed, who of course represented both Leeds United and Newcastle United. Lovely moment."

Gary Speed's memory lives on for Leeds and Newcastle

It was a genuinely touching moment at Elland Road, and proof - not that it were needed - that Speed's memory will always live on among the Leeds and Newcastle fans.

Rivals on the pitch they may be, but fair play to both fanbases for what was a very nice moment in a highly charged fixture.

Speed was an excellent servant to Leeds, coming through the routh yanks at Elland Road and playing eight seasons in the first team before departing for Everton

It is testamant to the man that all of his former clubs revere him so strongly, with Speed also representing Everton, Bolton Wanderers, and Sheffield United in a lengthy career.
