Leeds United star Wilfried Gnonto sends message to Crysencio Summerville after World Cup bow

Published on

Leeds United star Wilfried Gnonto was among the well-wishers to reach out to West Ham's Crysencio Summerville following his World Cup bow.

The pair were teammates at Elland Road for a couple of years prior to Summerville's move to West Ham in August 2024.

Summerville has endured a mixed time of things since joining the Hammers in a £25million deal.

While the 24-year-old has caught the eye, he was part of a team relegated to the Championship this past season.

But Summerville was still included as part of the Netherlands' World Cup squad and made his tournament bow against Japan on Sunday evening.

Summerville took great pride in that as he took to social media on Monday.

Junior Firpo also reaches out to Crysencio Summerville

Summerville only made his Netherlands debut 11 days before the clash with Japan.

He certainly made the most of Ronald Koeman's decision to throw him into the starting line-up as he was on the scoresheet in the 2-2 draw.

Summerville is of Surinamese descent, with talk he would represent that nation, but instead he opted for the country of his birth.

After netting his first senior international goal, Summerville posted on Instagram: "Grateful for the opportunity to make my debut and score my first goal.

"That one was for you grandma and grandad. In my story, God always gets the glory."

Gnonto replied to the post with: "Big player."

Fellow former Elland Road ace Junior Firpo, meanwhile, wrote: "Starboy."

Summerville finds himself in interesting situation post-Leeds

Summerville was a fan favourite at Elland Road, but fans were not happy to see him depart two years ago.

The Dutchman is now set to ply his trade in the second tier again, which is exactly where he did not want to find himself when quitting Leeds.

However, he has a number of suitors and is surely not going to start next season in the second tier.

There have been no links with a return to Leeds, but you do have to wonder if that is a deal that would make sense.

Daniel Farke would have an additional attacking option out wide, and one who is now proven in the Premier League.

If the price is right, stranger things have certainly happened.
