Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier managed to get under the skin of Sunderland fans at the Stadium of Light on 4 October.

The game ended 2-2 after the Frenchman's howler in the dying stages but with the score at 2-1, the 24-year-old went down with a suspected injury which annoyed the home support.

They thought that the Frenchman was wasting time as Daniel Farke's side looked to hold out for a famous away win.

Chronicle Live journalist Matty Hewitt wrote on X: "Chris Rigg is replaced by Alan Browne. Illan Meslier down receiving treatment. #SAFC fans not happy who think the Leeds goalkeeper is wasting time."

Illan Meslier is pivotal to Leeds United getting promoted this season

It's ridiculous to think that he was wasting time when he was getting treatment as there were legitimate fears of an injury.

Meslier obviously had a tough second half to endure and hopefully, he comes out of it stronger as he has been under-fire recently.

Junior Firpo's reaction to the error was certainly unwarranted as what the Frenchman needs now is for the fans and his teammates to support him.

He did make a few important saves in the game, but unfortunately, what everyone will remember from it will be the howler at the end.

Hopefully, he does not let it get to him and he uses the international break as a way to unwind and get his focus off the game for a while to return to the best mental state possible.

Leeds and Daniel Farke will need him for the rest of the season as they aim to return to the Premier League.
