Leeds United star Ao Tanaka starred as Japan earned a 1-1 draw with Sweden on Friday morning.

The 27-year-old did not feature in the World Cup opener against the Netherlands, but started against Tunisia and the Blue and Yellow.

His latest exploits will be a highly encouraging one for Whites supporters who stayed up to get a glimpse of their man.

The Leeds man was the standout player in the contest, dictating play from the base of midfield, and helping his side qualify for the knockout stages.

The Blue Samurai are into the round of 32, where they will face Brazil for a chance to progress into the latter stages.

If Tanaka continues in his current vein of form, they may have a chance of causing a shock.

Why Ao Tanaka caused such a stir in Japan draw vs Sweden

One action from Tanaka in particular earned plaudits from BBC commentator Chris Sutton.

In the 45th minute, he started off an attack with a quick flicked pass that set his side away.

Unfortunately, his teammates could not finish the move and they went into the break level.

However, former Celtic and Chelsea striker Sutton could not hide how awestruck that he was by the pass.

Speaking on the live broadcast (00:44 am), he said: “That all came from Tanaka again, that early pass from him was absolutely sensational”

What Tanaka's latest display means for his future under Daniel Farke?

Tanaka struggled to feature regularly in the Premier League last season, making 28 appearances, with just 14 starts.

However, he proved that he has the quality to be a regular starter for Daniel Farke, with his display on the biggest stage of them all.

The Peacocks ace had the most touches in the contest, with 93, according to data from Fotmob.

He completed 89 per cent of his passes and made one chance for his teammates in the contest.

Tanaka also made the most dribbles in the clash with three, and made seven passes into the final third.

Defensively, he made three tackles, one interception, one clearance and eight recoveries, winning eight of his 13 ground duels.

That suggests that he can be a key player for the LS11 side next season, if the manager places his trust in the Japan star.

There had been reports that he may be on the chopping block this summer, but surely an exit is not possible after his showings at the tournament.
