'Frightening' – Lee Bowyer makes Leeds claim in honest interview on talkSPORT

Charlton were relegated from the Championship after the 4-0 defeat by Leeds United at Elland Road on Wednesday and manager Lee Bowyer cut a very desolate figure on Thursday.

His side were relegated by a point after Barnsley scored a shock winner against top-two hunting side Brentford in injury time.

Bowyer said the gulf in class between Charlton and Leeds was "frightening" and "unreal".

Talking on the White & Sawyer show, Bowyer said, "That's probably the lowest I've felt in my whole career. That hurt a lot because of the hard work we put in all season, and we were so close.

"We've had to juggle... there's so much gone on that nobody knows, it's been frightening really.

"It's scary to see things like that happen behind the scenes. I feel for everyone at the club.

"You saw it last night. The game last night, it was frightening. The difference between the two teams was unreal.

"I've never felt so low in my whole life. I'm not in a good place."

We've got a lot of sympathy for Bowyer.

He went into the final game of the season with a real chance of survival despite losing key players thanks to the Coronavirus outbreak.

With the games heading into injury time, Charlton were still safe, with Barnsley set to get relegated with their game against Brentford all square at 1-1.

Brentford needed a win to get automatic promotion but Barnsley were the side pishing hardest and scored through – ironically – former Leeds Under-23 star Clarke Oduor.

That goal condemned Charlton to League 1 despite Wigan getting deducted 12 points.

Bowyer was classy in defeat, talking about a gulf in class between his side and Leeds, but you could tell he was hurting a lot.

Bowyer has been described as a possible successor to Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds but he's going to need to regroup after this major disappointment.

We wouldn't discount him being involved in the Leeds journey at some point in the future, however.
