Everything Wayne Rooney said about Leeds' win vs Nottingham Forest on Match of the Day
Wayne Rooney has spoken highly of Leeds United's summer recruitment after seeing their debutants in action against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
Daniel Farke's side won their Premier League opener 1-0 at the City Ground, courtesy of a late free-kick by Anton Stach finding it's way into the back of the net.
James Trafford, Tarik Muharemovic and Harry Wilson all made their first competitive appearances for the Whites in the East Midlands.
While Trafford made some good saves and Wilson was unfortunate to not get on the scoresheet, it was Muharemovic who impressed Rooney the most.
Leeds signed the Bosnia & Herzegovina international from Sassuolo for £34.1million in July, and the centre-back has since become a hit among the Elland Road fanbase.
And Rooney also spoke highly of the way Muharemovic performaned at centre-back against Forest.
Wayne Rooney's assessment of Tarik Muharemovic's Leeds debut
Muharemovic started alongside Jaka Bijol and Joe Rodon in a back-three on Saturday.
Rooney was happy with the way the 23-year-old controlled possession when he had the ball, and also the way he read the game and caused an issue for Forest when he got forward.
"They're good signings," Rooney said on BBC One's Match of the Day on Saturday.
"Leeds are a good team - a good, physical team. They've been clever with the signings.
"It's a big season for James Trafford to prove himself and try to get in that England squad. That was a really good save from him.
"Muharemovic looks very composed on the ball. He's a big lad and good in both boxes, but here you see his composure.
"And then Harry Wilson comes into the team. You know he had a fantastic season last season; hes' a very clever player, very good movement and he's just unlucky with the offside.
"Leeds were well worthy of the win [on Saturday]. Wilson was popping up in little areas and again, Muharemovic got into the penalty box, he's a good threat on crosses into the box and here, he's quick across the ground for such a big lad. It's a good tackle from him.
"And then, to top it all off, Stach with a good free-kick.
"It goes through the wall, so I'll be asking questions about the wall and the keeper could do better.
"But it's a really good start for Leeds. 1-0, clean sheet away from home. I think Leeds will have a good season. They've recruited well."
The stats behind Muharemovic's debut
According to Sofascore, Muharemovic made seven defensive contributions against Forest on Saturday.
He made two intereceptions, completed five clearances and won two aerial duels to help keep Forest at bay.
On the ball, he completed 89 per cent of his passes and kept Leeds going forward by completing 73 per cent of his passes into the opposition half.
The ex-Sassuolo ace also had one shot at goal, which was a header that forced Matz Sels into a good save.
Leeds lost Pascal Struijk in the summer but they appear to have replaced him with an upgrade, if anything, based on the performance at the City Ground.
