Ethan Ampadu wows with an 'unbelievable' moment in Leeds United defeat to Chelsea

Leeds United were defeated by Chelsea in a nine-goal thriller in the EFL Cup on Wednesday.

The Whites had led 2-0 at Elland Road through Tarik Muharemovic and Brenden Aaronson goals either side of half-time at Stamford Bridge.

But a wild second half saw the hosts roar back to win 6-3, with Cole Palmer and Danny Welbeck scoring twice, while Pedro Neto and Valentin Barco were also on target.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin had netted in the 75th minute to bring it back to 4-3, but Leeds ultimately crashed out of round three in a classic.

While there will always be concerns about conceding six goals, there were plenty of positives for Leeds to take from the defeat.

And one moment especially from captain Ethan Ampadu caught the eye on BBC Radio Leeds.

Ampadu is just also reliably brilliant for Leeds, and a player who often goes under the radar outside of Elland Road.

The former Wales midfielder was back at the home of his former employers, and showed his talent in the build-up to the second goal.

Ampadu chased down what looked like a lost cause over on the right flank, and had the composure to find Lukas Nmecha in the area, who consequently picked out Aaronson.

The work of Ampadu was appreciated by the visiting supporters, and BBC Radio Leeds co-commentator Jon Newsome was wowed by what he saw.

Newsome said: "How well does Ethan Empudu do on that far side. Unbelievable. He picks the pocket, looks like the ball is going to run out of play, and he keeps it in and slides it across that six yard box. He has no right to win that ball back.

"Sticks it down the line, a little foot race, puts it across to Nmecha, who flicks it with the outside of his right foot, and opens it up for Brennan Aaronson who comes racing in from the far corner. It's a simple right foot pass into the goal."

More Chelsea disappointment for Leeds

It feels like a bit of a double-edged sword this defeat.

On the other hand, Leeds can focus entirely on the Premier League for the next few months, as they won't be back in cup competition until they enter the FA Cup in January.

But, it does feel like there was a real opportunity here, especially having led 2-0 before the absolute bedlam that followed.

It was especially galling given the Blues defeated Leeds in the FA Cup semi-finals last season.

Still, it has been an encouraging start to the campaign by Leeds, and they should still have plenty of confidence moving forward.
